Adapting to a New Method of Environmental Education with BIS HCMC

Over the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown period, Ecofieldtrips continued working with our partners to deliver content for the students working on their International Baccalaureate assessments for the subjects Geography, Biology (both standard and higher levels) and Environmental Systems and Societies. One of these schools is the British International School, Ho Chi Minh City (BIS HCMC).

Originally, the students were planning to go to Con Dao Islands in the south of Vietnam to conduct their research projects together with the team at Ecofieldtrips in April. However, due to international travel restrictions and health safety, we had to move the learning online instead of conducting physical lessons during the trip. Over the course of a few weeks, the team at Ecofieldtrips have worked with the teachers at BIS HCMC to create a lesson plan for the 30 odd students taking the assessment this year, some of whom are taking more than one subject.

In order to conduct the lessons, the team at Ecofieldtrips conducted classroom sessions for topics like Con Dao ecosystems, statistics and research methodology. In addition to that, the students were given one-on-one consultation time with the Ecofieldtrips team. This ensures the high quality of the interaction.  At the point of writing, all the students have come up with novel research questions, methods and did their relevant background research.

As the students prepare to go down to Con Dao in August to conduct the actual research, the team at Ecofieldtrips would also be doing all necessary arrangements, such as accommodation and transport, to take the load off the teachers in BISHCMC. They would also be available online as the students are conducting their research on the island to answer any last minute queries.

Other schools intending to work with Ecofieldtrips can be rest assured that the quality of education received by the students would not be compromised due to travel restrictions. The team at Ecofieldtrips are constantly looking for novel ideas and content delivery methods to engage the students. The team can also tailor the lessons to fit the requirements of different student ages, as well as assessment types.
